Wavers are typically independent creatures, and will not usually group together in packs to attack their intended prey, although the exception to this rule is against large, weakened creatures. They are hunter-scavengers; they will generally scavenge off of existing corpses, but if the search for food becomes futile they will begin to hunt living organisms instead.
Wavers are named for their distinctive arcing flight patterns, moving as if on an invisible wavy line through the air. While it is unknown why they perform this task, it is presumed that this increases the chances of catching small insectoids flying through the air, although it could equally be an instinctive movement style to deter would-be predators.
It is believed that the seemingly-extinct Chozo created their Wave Beam technology to celebrate the Waver as a holy creature. While Wavers are very likely indigenous to Zebes, where they are found in both Crateria and Brinstar, they have also been spotted aboard the Federation's Biological Space Laboratory, where they were placed in Sector 5, only to eventually be infected by the X-parasite, potentially indicating that the Space Pirates moved them offworld. If this is the case, they may not be extinct in the wild as currently believed to be the case after the destruction of Zebes.
