Vortlups are a non-sapient mammalian species from the cold Martian deserts, and have been domesticated as beasts of burden by the native Aihais.

Vortlups are mammalian creatures with long legs and necks, and bodies covered in thick-plated armor. They're described as tame and obedient, although sluggish, and are well-adapted to life in the desert, as they can survive for months without water. They make bellowing vocalizations.
