Tyrenni (sometimes called Tyreeans) are a sapient species of telepathic creatures which inhabit the atmosphere of the planet Tyree.

Biology[]

Tyrenni physically resemble giant manta rays, with a natural jet propulsion system and a flapping mantle. They spend their entire lives aloft, feeding on airborne vegetation, and never see the surface of their planet. Males are larger, endowed with more sensitive psychic abilities, and have a pouch to carry their young.

Tyrenni can see in any direction and communicate by flashing patterns of light over their bodies. In addition to light, they can also detect psychic activity, perceived as something that resembles an aura around their bodies, which they refer to as their "fields". Their psychic abilities are so strong that they can even transfer their minds to the bodies of other creatures, effectively switching minds with their target (which is considered a heinous crime in their society).

Culture and society[]

Male Tyrenni have names with two syllables, while female names have three syllables.

Appearances[]

  • Up the Walls of the World, by James Tiptree Jr. (pseudonym of Alice Sheldon) (1978)
