The Black Mass was a living, non-sapient amoebic mass of pure evil that terrorized the universe for millions of years, as well as the progenitor of Aku.

The Black Mass began floating in space for millions of years devouring life is reality until three gods: Odin, Ra, and Rama showed up to battle and destroy it with their weapons possessing their holy, god-like powers but miss a piece that eventually crashes down to earth, causing extinction to all dinosaurs. It developed into a pit of dark liquid, killing all who come in contact with it from prehistory to the dawn of Japanese civilization. In feudal Japan, the Emperor seted out to destroy the pit and clear the forest of spikes it had remotely projected but accidentally gave it's life, creating Aku.
