The Swarms are creatures native to the planet Coldfoot.
Biology[]
A Swarm resembles and Earth tardigrade. Though it is much bigger, having long, plump bodies and eight stubby legs. A Swarm is bioluminescent creature with an orange dermal membrane.
These are parasitic-esque creatures feeding off a native ore called Sig which they comb underground using long tendril-like tongues that function as their internal organs and are their primary senses as they use smell to navigate. These tendrils are incredibly long and can rip men to pieces. Once they have a target ensnared with their tendrils, they are devoured inside their bodies, however Swarm can only process Sig, thus, they excrete out all flesh and inorganic materials.
Swarms are not necessarily hostile only interest in consuming Sig as subsistence. Most of the time they dwell in a subterranean environment, digging vast caverns in search of Sig beneath Coldfoot.
Like their terran counterparts, they appear to be near invulnerable, with projectile and incendiary weaponry useless against their rubbery membranes, which seem to only repel or even stick inside them like jelly. Even when runover flat by a tremendous, a Swarm will merely expand to its normal shape. Using gas trapped inside they can float and hover in the arm to move.
The only clear ways to kill a Swarm is to have it expose its long tendril like tongue in order to sever it, causing it to starve and become blind. Or using slicing weaponry to puncture it skin which causes the gas inside them to explode when ripped open. However due to a Swarm containing a gas that provides lift but also is highly combustible, if internally disrupted with enough force will cause the specimen to explode,
The Swarm inhabit caverns which they lay thousands of eggs that can remain dormant for thousands of years.
Later its revealed that the Swarms are the prey species of massive gigantic worm-like creatures that dwell deep beneath Coldfoot.
