Alien Species

Not to be confused with the Stellar Devils.

The Space-devils (as referred to by Pánfilo de Zamacona y Nunes) are a mysterious alien species which invaded Earth in prehistory and was responsible for the cataclysmic floods that sank several landmasses.

Described as equally inimical to mankind and to the Great Old Ones, it's been suggested that they might have also been responsible for the much earlier catastrophe that resulted in the sinking of R'lyeh, and forced Cthulhu and his Star-spawn to go into hibernation. It's not known if the Space-devils are related to, allied with, or even synonymous with, the Elder Gods, as the latter are also enemies of the Great Old Ones who have been deemed responsible for "imprisoning" Cthulhu in sunken R'lyeh.

The arrival of the Space-devils on Earth led the K'n-yanians to cut off all trade with humanity, as it was believed that only the Humans who were allied with the Space-devils could have survived the cataclysm.

Appearances[]

  • The Mound, by H. P. Lovecraft (1940) (Mentioned only)

Notes[]

  • It's very possible that the Space-devils might be just another name for the Elder Gods, as both have been deemed responsible for imprisoning Cthulhu. Zamacona's narrative in The Mound portrays the Space-devils as hostile to any human who isn't allied with them, which is at odds with how the benevolent Elder Gods are portrayed in the works of August Derleth and Brian Lumley. However, it should be noted that Zamacona learned about the Space-devils from the K'n-yanians, who are worshipers of Cthulhu and would have every reason to be biased against the Elder Gods.
