Snake Men are a sapient, hostile species of reptilian humanoids which ruled the planet Eternia in ancient times. By the time of Prince Adam, the Snake Men's descendants are known as Reptons and have become a peaceful species, save for a few infamous individuals such as Kobra Khan.
Led by the evil King Hiss, the Snake Men built Snake Mountain, which would later be converted into Skeletor's lair following the Snake Men's banishment to another dimension.

Snake Men appear to be a diverse species, with different individuals displaying various abilities that others lack. These range from Kobra Khan's hidden cobra-like hood that can release soporific mist to King Hiss' ability to shapeshift his entire upper body into a monstrous five-headed serpent.
All Reptons have scaly skin, five-fingered hands, three-toed feet, flexible necks, no tail, clawed fingers, forked tongues, fangs, and yellow eyes with pupils that can be either slit-shaped or round, as well as a vulnerability to cold weather. Although Snake Men such as Rattlor consider the Reptons to be merely descendants of the "real" Snake Men, overall there doesn't seem to be a significant difference, save for the fact that some Snake Men have tails, although this isn't true for all of them.
As stated above, the rogue Repton known as Kobra Khan has the apparently unique ability to release sleeping mist from his cobra-like hidden hood, and has also demonstrated the ability to obliterate objects with eye beams. Among the Snake Men, the ability to stretch parts of their bodies seems to be widespread, e.g. Rattlor's extendable neck, Sssqueeze's extendable arms, and Tung Lashor's extendable prehensile tongue. In some cases, such as Snake Face's ability to turn other beings into stone, the powers are known to be magical in origin. When underwater, all Snake Men can shift into an aquatic mode and develop gills and webbed membranes.
Like Earth snakes, Snake Men are carnivorous and swallow prey whole, including even large prey such as Caligars. They're also known to shed their skin.
The ancient mystical artifact known as the Serpent's Ring can transform other species into Snake Men.
