The Rargians are a peaceful and highly advanced civilization of humanoids who dedicated every aspect of their society to the pursuit of discovery simply for the sake of discovery, a daunting but enjoyable task which motivated much of their carefree existence, until one fateful day changed their society forever.

Biology[]

The Rargians were a small race of humanoid beings standing at around only 0.5 meters in height, though this varied between individuals. Almost all Rargians shared the standard physical traits of their progenitor, appearing as a race of squat and portly bald humanoids with large bulbous noses and similar tanned skin complexions, however, these traits were not absolute, as some Rargians were possessed of lighter skin tones and were of substantial height, with some members standing close to 1 meter in height. Female Rargians were also as bald as the men, but would don headpieces to cover this, such as fluffy hats, and one female teacher even wore a book-shaped wig of sorts.

All Rargians were naturally hairless, but more elderly members could grow facial hair. Infant Rargians were all identical in appearance, resembling tiny large-headed humanoids with tanned skin who all sported garments that resembled clouds, and Rargian infants were also notable for being blessed with a remarkable aptitude for intelligence and speech not long after birth.

As already noted, some Rargians were of different skin tones and sizes, but whether these represent different ethnic tribes of the past is uncertain as all Rargians currently live in harmony. One notable class of Rargians though are an unnamed race of very tall humanoids who, unlike others of their kind, are endowed with the ability to levitate, freely being able to move through the air as they see fit, and these floating Rargians are made even more distinct by the fact that they have larger but flatter saucer-shaped heads and seem to only posses but one visible limb sporting a single hand with which they carry out most tasks, with the only trait they share with other Rargians being their large round noses. Many of these floating Rargians seem to function as servants for the grand senator of Rarg himself.

Rargian Library

The Vast Library of Rarg, the epicenter of Rargian society

Rargians were a seemingly ancient race of beings with a history that went back as far as 8,000 years, and the Rargians dedicated themselves solely to the pursuit of discovery simply for its own sake, finding great delight in making new discoveries everyday in the vast library of Rarg, which functioned as both an archive and a gigantic research institute where countless discoverers worked tirelessly every day to make new discoveries and invent new things that would make all of Rarg happy, with new discoveries being made every day, with some being large, some being tiny, and some... that had to be seen to be believed.

The Ultimate Discovery[]

Rargians - Prof Peridot and the students

The great Professor Peridot, the Rargian discoverer who would change the course of history

One such discovery that defied all explanation and shook the very planet of Rarg to its core was the one made by the great discoverer, Professor Peridot. Professor Peridot, unlike his fellow compatriots, dedicated himself to the singular pursuit of figuring out just where exactly in infinity was Rarg located, having dedicated 30 years of his life to placing information-sucking electrodes all around Rarg, with many in the planet's crust, others in the grand library, and some pointing to the heavens to search infinity for clues for Rarg's location, with all the electrodes being linked to the central computer of his laboratory where the data would be compiled to determine the final answer after 30 long years of work.

Rargians - Flicking the switch

Prof. Peridot prepares to make his ultimate discovery

On the day Prof. Peridot prepared to finally put his discovery in motion, he was visited by a class of young Rargians out on a school trip whose teacher wished for them to witness a real discovery firsthand, a wish which Prof. Peridot had little freedom in refusing. Upon meeting the bright-eyed students, Prof. Peridot went into great detail about his long 30 year period of research and how it was about to finally culminate in the ultimate answer of Rarg's place in infinity.

Rargians - The Great Discovery

Prof. Peridot discovers the great truth of Rarg

Prof. Peridot's words greatly inspired the inquisitive young minds who beckoned Prof. Peridot to activate his computer so as to finally learn the answer to Rarg's greatest mystery, egging on the professor with delight for him to flick the switch that would change Rarg's destiny forever. With great hesitance, the anticipation overtook the professor as his finger loomed over his computer's main activator, and with one final flick of the switch, he activated the electrodes, which quickly compiled all information on and beyond Rarg which was then transmitted to the main computer terminal, finally displaying the true location of Rarg for all those in the lab to see, but what they saw shook them to their core and would go on to shake all of Rarg, both figuratively and literally.

Rargians - The ultimate discovery, Edwin Barnes

The ultimate discovery is made... Edwin Barnes

On the screen of the computer, Prof. Peridot and his young disciples were witness to what would be Rarg's ultimate discovery and its ultimate problem... the true location and nature of their world... the dream of a man named, Edwin Barnes, an unassuming figure deep in slumber. The revelation of this discovery shocked Peridot and the children, but Peridot did not let himself be wrought with existential concerns, instead, he saw this as an amazing discovery, one that would make him the most famous and celebrated scientist of all, the discovery that all of Rarg was just a dream. Unfortunately for Prof. Peridot, his own daydream was soon disturbed by one of the pupils who took notice that Edwin Barnes' own alarm clock was about to go off in 5 minutes (roughly 2 weeks of Rargian time), making Peridot and the boys fear that their world would end should Barnes awaken.

Rargian Senate

The Rargian Senate convenes after 8,000 years

Sending an emergency letter to the great Senator of Rarg of this new discovery, word of it quickly spread all over, sending the entire world of Rarg into a panic the likes of which had never been seen before on Rarg and leading to the first major Rargian senatorial meeting in 8,000 years in the hopes of either finding a solution to their dilemma or accepting their fate. A disillusioned Prof. Peridot had given up on salvation, but one of his pupils did not give up so easily, with the brilliant infant having conceived plans for a massive interdimensional gateway which would allow a select few to pierce through the barrier between the dimension of dreams and that of reality, and find a way to disable the alarm clock. Having no other options, the senator approved this plan and began the massive construction project for the gateway, a monolithic task that every citizen on Rarg put their heart and hopes into.

Rargians - The Gateway

The Gateway is completed

For many days and nights of slower-moving Rargian time, the entire population of Rarg rallied together to work tirelessly to construct the massive towers of the gateway, and after much collaboration and renewed hopes, the gateway was finally completed and ready to be activated. The Senator of Rarg then sent the four bravest men on Rarg on a mission to the waking world, a mission to bring back Edwin Barnes himself and bring him into the world born of his own dream.

Rargians - Escorting Edwin Barnes

The Rargians witness the arrival of Edwin Barnes

Though it seemed impossible, the brave dreamnauts were successful in their mission, penetrating the veil between the two worlds and bringing back their cherished creator, Edwin Barnes, still peacefully asleep on his own bed carried by the Rargian chosen. From here, the population of Rarg's capital silently allowed Barnes to be escorted to his new residence, a palace of his own made entirely of fluffy, golden, sound-proof pillows where Rarg's citizens hoped their creator could slumber peacefully for all time as Rarg's population celebrated.

Rargians - The best discovery of all

The best discovery of all

However, just as things were going accordingly, something unexpected happened, Edwin Barnes began dreaming of something new... flamingos! Bright pink flamingos which slowly caused everyone on Rarg to slowly begin transforming into graceful flamingos, and this was not seen as a misfortune, far from it. In fact, the transformation was seen as something beyond wonderful as all of Rarg took flight and the Senator of Rarg himself (who fittingly enough bared the strongest resemblance to Barnes himself) declared that this was truly the best discovery of all as he transformed into a jolly flamingo and Barnes himself smiled happily in his slumber.

Rargians - The dreamer of the dreamer

The true dreamer's alarm clock is turned off as flamingos take care of his needs

With all of Rarg's inhabitants having been transformed into flamingos, they began happily circling the bed of their creator as he peacefully dreamed of Rargian Flamingos. But, even as Barnes seemed to be the dreamer of his dream, he was himself in fact the dream of the true dreamer, a storyteller happily sleeping away in his chair, whose own alarm clock was mysteriously turned off by the wing of a bright pink flamingo.
