The Purple Pikmin is a subterranean species of Pikmin that was discovered during Captain Olimar's secondary visit to PNF-404. It, alongside the White Pikmin, seemingly don't have a signature Onion for reproduction, most of this species being born from Candypop Buds. Recent studies by the Rescue Corps label them as an endangered species due to this.

Purple Pikmin are a stockier, and slower Pikmin with purple coloration, and have pink flowers instead of the usual white. Mostly found underground, Purple Pikmin are also much stronger than most other Pikmin, able to carry objects that would normally require ten Pikmin to carry. This strength is used often to dug underground and move rocks out of the way.
Adapted just as well to its underground lifestyle, its head is dotted with several feelers or hairs, which it uses to sense its surroundings in the dark caverns and tunnels where it lives. A group was also observed in the presence of Mitites, not showing much fear as opposed to other Pikmin which normally panic.

- Their taxonomic name, Pikminidae yokozunum, is derived from "Yokozuna", the highest rank of sumo wrestlers, alluding to their heavyset bodies and sumo wrestler-like attack methods.
