The Nagarya are a species from an unknown planet.
Biology[]
Nagarya appear to be descended from humanity.
History[]
A quartet of human astronauts crashland on a unknown planet where they encounter a primeval Eden. They found evidence of a wrecked ancient human colony ship, and eventually the regressed human descendants known as the Nymph. After many attempts the Earthmen successes integrate into a small tribe of Nymphs and re-teach them took use. Crossing the river they reach a ruined city which causes their adopted tribe to be agitated. Making camp at the vicinity of the city they hear a scream, though the Earthmen wishes to investigate, their mates refuse until daybreak.
The group stumbles deeper into the ruins where they find the source of the previous night’s scream: awoman suspended in the air strapped to a pillar. John and Erkaton immediately cut her down but what they find in the darkness of the ruins turns their stomach: mutilated bodies of Nymphs scattered on the stone floors. And hangingfrom the ceiling are corpses like those from a butcher shop. Sicken by this scene the tribe make a hasty retreat from the evil place brining their new companion. They nurse her to health but she quickly flees when they are distracted. She returns though with several male members of her tribe. Overtime more Nymphs gather to them. However the group becomes a target when several deaths and mutilated bodies show up. The group catch the killer revealing to be an armored man or what the Nymph referred as a Nagarya. The Nymphs with the guidance of the Earthmen then began a guerilla campaign against the Nagarya.
Culture[]
Nagarya appear no different than Nymphs though they dress in attire similar to Ancient Greece. Soldiers were armed with helms, shields, greaves and glaives.
The soldiers sent into the ruins display horrible acts of cruelty. Nymphs that are captured by these men are brutally butchered and mutilated, the ones they spare suffer worse and are hanged like scarecrows as warnings. Whether this is some form of sick entertainment or a psychological tactic to dissuade the Nymphs from reclaiming the ruined city is unknown, but their actions have resulted in driving the Nymphs deeper into the jungles to avoid this grisly fate and further regressing them into barbarity.
Speculation[]
Many details in the comic remain unresolved, but a few theories have been suggested to explain the relationship between the Nymphs and Nagarya. That the Nymphs are exiled members of the Nagarya, or that the Nagarya are a culture that conquered and destroyed the Nymph civilization. Fundamentally the result remains the same: the Nymphs are a subjugated people that live in fear of the Nagarya. Nymph speak their name in hush tones which they have associated with death.
Evidence in the comic shows that the Nymphs fear of manufactured objects is artificial and their animalistic behavior is cultural rather than biological. This could have originated from when the Nymphs were indoctrinated by the Nagarya who captured the survivors. Nymphs may have at one point civilized but were stripped of all articles of technology, forcing them to live in a primitive lifestyle. It would be plausible as the Nymphs in the wild were constantly on the run in fear of soldiers from the Nagarya who apparently hunted them for sport. Forbidden to touch or craft tools the Nymphs were little more than game animals.
It’s also inferred that the Nagarya were responsible for implanting contraceptive devices within the Nymph women. For what purpose remains unclear, though it may have been to breed them out and prevent their numbers from growing to prevent a possible insurgency.
