Alien Species

Martians (a.k.a. the Others) are a sapient insectoid species which evolved on Mars in several alternative timelines resulting from a convoluted temporal paradox.

Biology[]

Martians are insectoids with a green-and-red exoskeleton, dome-shaped latticed eyes, and a pair of antennae. Their eyes can change color from silver to amber.

History[]

The Martian species evolved as a result of a temporal paradox created when millions of different timelines overlapped. Millions of versions of Human inventor Jack Kowaczski traveled back in time in a homemade time machine with the intention of warning the Martians that Humans were about to invade Mars. Many of these versions of Kowaczski ended up traveling too far into the past, to arrive on an uninhabitable Mars where they died instantly. The water and nutrients in the bodies of millions of dead Kowaczskis fertilized the Martian soil, and the gut bacteria in their bodies eventually evolved into the insectoid Martians.

Martian civilization had existed for a million years at the time Humans first arrived on Mars and nearly wiped them out in a space of only ten years. The surviving Martians interpreted the Humans' victory in spite of numerical inferiority as a sign that Humans were a superior species, and became willing servants to their conquerors. However, in at least one timeline, other versions of Kowaczski did manage to warn the Martians of what was about to happen. In this timeline, the Martians built a fleet of spaceships and visited prehistoric Earth, where they periodically culled the Human population, keeping the Human species alive but ensuring that they would never develop the technology to invade Mars.

Being a wise species, the Martians came to understand and accept the fact that their existence was never meant to be, and opted not to interfere with the Doctor and Sabbath's plan to prevent Kowaczski from building the time machine in the first place, which erased all timelines in which the Martians evolved.

Appearances[]

  • BBC Eighth Doctor Adventures, The Last Resort, by Paul Leonard (2003)

Notes[]

  • They are one of several Martian races known to exist in the Doctor Who multiverse. Others include the Ice Warriors from the original series, the Martians from the Peter Cushing's Dr. Who universe, H. G. Wells' Martians, and the Ninnies.
