The Lawn gnomes are an unnamed, short, gnome-like species from Polovia, and the supposed creators of the Mecha-noids.

Biology[]

Lawn gnomes are short humanoids, resembling Humans in build and features, although they have pale skin, spaced out yellow teeth, and reddish eyes. They are known to freeze in the presence of bright light, only able to become active during the night.

Culture and society[]

The lawn gnomes, being nocturnal, rely on robots to manage their civilization during the day. For reasons unknown, they design these robots to operate as families, with robots built as children and adults, who have fairly "normal" lives in relation to Humans. Also for reasons unknown, during the daytime, gnomes stand on the lawns of houses, acting as an ornament. Their clothing is known to consist of buttoned-up blue shirts with turquoise vests, belts, and tall, pointed red hats. Their language, or at least that of their robots, is known to be very similar to English.

Technology[]

The lawn gnomes have developed highly sophisticated robotics, able to make them fully sapient and presumably able to "grow" like organics. In addition, standard gnome structures are made of stumis, a material that cannot burn.

History[]

The lawn gnomes arose on the planet Polovia, and developed a civilization despite only being able to move at night. To have tasks done in the day, the gnomes created Human-like robots known as Mecha-noids, who "live" and operate during the day. One day, a Mecha-noid named Pul-Mar began malfunctioning, forgetting that he was a robot and believing that he is a troublemaker who had moved after burning down his house, has a sister named Kayla, lives on Earth, which is supposedly a made-up planet, and is named Jay. The lawn gnomes did not react to his malfunction until nightfall, when Pul-Mar attempted to vandalize them for a prank. The gnomes awoke and grabbed him, drawing an M onto his forehead while repeatedly calling him a malfunction, although Pul-Mar got away. The next night, when Pul-Mar and another Mecha-noid named Elliot investigated the gnomes, the gnomes came to life once more and began hauling the two off, only for Pul-Mar to subdue them with a light stick. However, the light soon goes out, allowing the gnomes to haul Pul-Mar towards a nearby quicksand pit known as the Quagmire. The gnomes then throw Pul-Mar in, before retrieving him with a net, as the action reset Pul-Mar's programming, soon joined by Pul-Mar's family units, Elliot, and a neighbor Mecha-noid. After finding that Pul-Mar remembered who he really was, the gnomes allowed him to return home.

Appearances[]

  • "Planet of the Lawn Gnomes", by R.L. Stine (2012)

Notes[]

  • This species is distinct from the lawn gnomes featured in "Revenge of the Lawn Gnomes", as those lawn gnomes are not said to be of alien origin.
  • The ending of the book involves Mr. Phineas, Pul-Mar's dog, telling him that it's time to return to Earth. This implies that the Mecha-noids may have actually come from Earth, possibly once being Humans that the lawn gnomes converted to robotic servants, and that Earth is not an imaginary planet in the book's universe.
  • The name of this species may be "Polovians," after their planet.
