Jarada, a.k.a. Jaradans, are a sapient, spacefaring insectoid race from the planet Torona IV. In 2364 they were considered strategically important as potential new allies to the Federation.

Culture and society[]

Jarada are widely regarded as a difficult species to deal with. They're reclusive, and have what has been described as an idiosyncratic attitude towards protocol. Like the Kreetassans, they get easily offended if what they regard as proper protocol is not followed.

In particular, the Jarada demand other species that wish to engage in diplomacy with them to greet them in the Jaradan language, which is very difficult to master. Even slight errors of pronunciation will be interpreted as insults by the Jarada. In one documented incident, a mispronunciation of the greeting resulted in a twenty-year rift.

Appearances[]

  • Star Trek: The Next Generation, s01e12, "The Big Goodbye" (1988)

Notes[]

  • The name of their homeworld, Torona IV, originates from the episode's script, but wasn't used in the actual episode.
