The Invisibles are a telepathic, invisible, sapient species from Walter Moers' Zamonia series. They had to leave their home planet a long time ago due to a natural disaster. The Invisibles landed on Earth and settled in Zamonia, laying the foundation for the city of Atlantis.

No Invisibles are mentioned by name. It is unknown whether one simply does not learn their names or whether they use names at all.

Description[]

They owe their name to the fact that they are completely invisible to the inhabitants of earth. Due to their invisibility, it is impossible to tell anything about their physique. They may not actually have physical bodies at all, but instead may be made of thinking electricity, which would be no exception on their home planet.

In any case, they can speak, which sounds like a small trumpet, and are able to use tools. Because they are not visible to Earthlings, they must occasionally draw attention to themselves through speech if they are to be followed. In addition to the ability to speak, they possess perfect mind-reading abilities.

They are peace-loving in nature, helpful to other Atlanteans, and include all sorts of beings that can't cope on the surface. These too are then called Invisibles. The community of all Invisibles is respected in Atlantis and is supplied by food donations. However, the real Invisibles were just a rumor for a long time. The Blue Lightnings were also attributed to them, which was true.

History[]

Many thousands of years ago, the Invisible People came to Earth from their home planet. Little is known about this planet, but "actually everything" should be different than on Earth, for example there were seas of electricity there. Electricity seems to play an important role with the invisible people in general. Transistors are distributed in the tunnels under Atlantis, which crackle and hum electrically.

In Atlantis they built large, copper-colored buildings in which other laws of nature ruled. As the population of Atlantis continued to increase, they abandoned their above-ground dwellings and retreated into the sewers.

Under Atlantis they erected great, virtuosic halls and tunnels that represented their new home. They worked for 4000 years on an underground machine that would rise into space with Atlantis to return to their home planet. Their plan to leave Earth succeeded and Atlantis floated away from Earth with its inhabitants including the Invisibles.
