Genetically engineered at the behest of the renegade Xel'naga Amon, the Hybrids are a combination of Protoss and Zerg.
Overview.[]
As per their infinite cycle, the Xel'naga reproduced by transferring their essence to the result of two species meeting, one pure of form and the other pure of essence. However, Amon violated his people's law of non-intervention and uplifted two species; the Protoss and the Zerg. During this time, Amon created the Overmind in order to control the Zerg and force them into conflict with the Protoss. When the Xel'naga tried to prevent this, Amon used the Zerg to exterminate them.
During the First Great War between the Protoss, Zerg and Humans of the Koprulu Sector, a Xel'naga loyal to Amon manipulated the three species against one another under the guise of a Human named Lieutenant Samir Duran. As a result, he acquired the resources necessary to orchestrate research into the splicing of Protoss and Zerg genomes. When a Protoss Dark Templar, Zeratul, accidentally stumbled across these experiments, Duran described the hybrids as a "culmination of your history." Despite their origins and Duran's description however, the Hybrids are not true Xel'naga, but near mindless monsters subservient to Amon.
The Hybrids were revealed to the three major species when Zeratul encountered one on Zhakul after it imprisoned three Protoss Preservers and enthralled the remaining military garrison. Elsewhere, Human scientists belonging to the Terran Dominion continued to clone more hybrids under the authority of Amon's servant, now under the guise of Dr. Emil Narud. After escaping from the Dominion and their experiments. the infested Human Alexei Stukov allied with the Queen of Blades and warned her about the Hybrids. Although the Zerg queen killed several Hybrids and defeated Narud in combat, several more Hybrids remained across the sector.
Over the course of the End War, the Hybrids led Amon's armies of enthralled Humans, Zerg and Protoss in war against the universe. As discovered by Artanis in his campaign against Amon, the Hybrids were prototypes for the creation of a physical form for Amon. During the battle of Aiur, the Protoss destroyed Amon's hybrid body and their Khala, forcing him back into the void and freeing the Protoss from his control.
Although the Hybrids were spread out across the Koprulu Sector, it is unknown if any survived after Amon was killed by Sarah Kerrigan.
Variants[]
- Destroyer: A Hybrid primarily resembling a Protoss, Destroyers primarily fought with psionic abilities.
- Dominator: An enhanced version of the Destroyer.
- Moebius: Hybrid Destroyers modified with cybernetic enhancements.
- Nemesis: Flying fish-like Hybrids.
- Prometheus: Three Hybrids serving as Narud's bodyguards, eaching displaying unique Zerg-like traits.
- Reaver: A hulking Hybrid dominantly Zerg-like in appearance. The Reaver primarily fights physically and is capable of mind controlling Humans and Zerg.
- Behemoth: A larger, enhanced version of the Reaver.
- Voidshade: An extremely powerful Hybrid, its capabilities are unknown as it's summoning from the void was interrupted.
