Alien Species

The Hexagora are a sapient, intergalactic nomadic species of hive-based insectoids. They are known for using a web-like substance known as the hexian to store their collective memories.

Biology[]

The Hexagora have been described as humanoid insects, adapted to survive in tropical environments. As they are cold-blooded, they don't fare well in colder temperatures. They have mandible mouthparts, compound eyes, two sets of wings, and jointed limbs. Their lifespan is about 500 years, and they take considerable time to reach maturity.

Culture and society[]

The Hexagora are a nomadic species which travels in swarms from world to world, colonising those that have a suitably tropical weather and no native sapients. Their technology is partially based on a web-like substance known as the hexian, a remnant from their original homeworld. The hexian can be used as a source of nourishment, and to preserve bodies in a state of hibernation. More importantly, however, it can also preserve the mind or memories of a sapient being, creating a collective "memory pool" that contains all the knowledge that the Hexagora deemed worth preserving. Another consequence of this is that the hexian can be used as a medium to allow the Hexagora to switch minds with other species.

Hexagora hives are matriarchal, ruled by a single Queen, who may take multiple males as consorts. They have a hive-based mentality that allows them to work cooperatively, with very little conflict among themselves. Both their cooperative behaviour and access to their collective memory pool are based on the way the Hexagora brain is structured: if a Hexagora transfers his or her consciousness to another being, they will gradually start to lose these qualities.

The Hexagora regard themselves as a peaceful species and will not engage in violence unless attacked first. However, they will fight back fiercely if forced to defend themselves, and aren't above abducting other species and taking over their bodies if this is deemed necessary for the Hexagora's survival.

History[]

At some point in history, the Hexagora colonised the planet Zagara IX in the Acteon Galaxy. When the hostile Agellae invaded this world and tried to conquer it, the Hexagora fought back and successfully destroyed the entire Agellae armada of over 100,000 ships.

In the 16th century, the Hexagora sent scouts to Earth and found it unsuitable for colonisation. Instead, they moved on to settle on the planet Luparis in the Proxima Centauri System: a lush tropical world with no native sapients. Unfortunately, shortly after they settled, the planet went through a period of glaciation, threatening the survival of the colonists. As their younger generations hadn't matured yet, and wouldn't survive another migration through space, the Hexagora had no way to leave Luparis. Desperate, they sent out space pods to Earth to abduct Humans and bring them to Luparis, where the Hexagora switched their minds with the abductees, as the Human bodies were better equipped to survive the ice age.
