The hellfire wasp is shaped much like a typical Earth wasp, but is similar in size to a sparrow. Although usually observed flying alone, swarms nearly the size of a robodozer have been sighted. Human personnel on Pandora are warned not to approach swarms of hellfire wasps, as they might see this as a threat display and attack.
It has an accurate organic targeting system that uses an olfactory organ to detect the biochemistry of any nearby creature. If it senses danger, its flight becomes agitated and erratic, and it will usually attack.
If stung by this dual-stinger insect, the RDA personnel are commonly placed on medical leave for several days. Although rarely lethal to humans and Na'vi, it is believed that an attack from a swarm of hellfire wasps would ultimately result in fatality.
Anatomy[]
Wingspan of 13 centimeters, hard exoskeleton, compound eyes, bioluminescence, dual stinger, height of 25 centimeters.
Various wasp species have been found in Pandoran microclimates, including mountain valley, stream beds, and beaches. Hellfire wasps build small nests in fallen, rotting trees within rainforests and swamplands.
Bioluminescence makes them highly visible at night, but they are still fast enough to strike even with advanced warning.
Notes[]
- The hellfire wasp appears on Movie Masters Quaritch's i-Tag.
Appearances[]
- Before Jake Sully attempts to ride Pale, a direhorse, several hellfire wasps can be seen flying around the area.
