Halanans are a sapient humanoid species from the planet Halana, known for being psychoprojective telepaths.
Biology[]
Halanans are humanoids with distinctive double-pointed ears. Their most notable trait is their psychoprojective telepathy, which allows them to subconsciously project illusory individuals that appear real and may even behave like living self-aware entities.
These illusory personas appear physically identical to the Halanan, but have distinct names and identities. They are unaware of their own nature, unaware of the Halanan that has created them, and believe themselves to be real people, despite having no clear memories of their lives before the present. The Halanan, meanwhile, is often unaware of these projections, as they are a creation of the Halanan's subconscious minds, and thus more akin to dreams than conscious creations.
During times of emotional distress, Halanans lose control over their abilities. In these circumstances, the continuous existence of the illusions can put an enormous stress on the Halanan's occipital lobe, to the point of leading to unconsciousness and even death.
Culture and society[]
Halanans mate for life and are not legally allowed to leave their spouses even if they want to.
History[]
At some point in the 24th century, the Halanans have colonized a planet they named New Halana, which was terraformed for them by Human terraformation expert Gideon Seyetik.
Appearances[]
- Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, s02e09, "Second Sight" (1993)
Notes[]
- The fact that New Halana was terraformed by a Federation scientist suggests that the Halanans might be members of the Federation.
