The Grineer are a race of transhuman clones created by the Orokin to serve as slaves. With the Orokin now gone, the Grineer have since become a warmongering empire in their own right.
Overview[]
The Grineer were cloned from Human DNA for use as expendable slave labour for the Orokin, then later as cannon fodder for their military. To ensure the Grineer's subservience, the cloning process was intentionally flawed, causing the Grineer to rapidly deteriorate over a relatively short time. After the Tenno destroyed the Orokin Empire, the Grineer were freed from servitude and left to their own devices. By the time the Tenno reawakened in the modern age, the Grineer had established an empire of their own, claiming around half of the Origin System for themselves. Likely in part to the physical and mental degradation inherent to all Grineer, they have become xenophobic warmongers, often demonstrating either intense hatred for all non-Grineer life, or blatant insanity. Either way, the Grineer clone their armies on an industrial scale, waging war against the Tenno, Corpus, Infestation and Sentients with primitive but effective weapons technology.
Biology[]
The Grineer are genetically modified clones that were created by the Orokin Empire as labourers, they were later modified and militarized using the DNA of an individual who defeated a Sentient assailant. The Grineer are humanoid creatures, descending from the human species. The Grineer are genetically defective due to their genome being damaged by their creators and further more by the invasive cloning procedures they were using. Their defects depend on the individual, but typically manifest as their bodies rotting as though they were decomposing whilst still alive, as well as severe mental instability. Their lifespan is shortened to only a fraction of a normal human lifespan. The Grineer compensate for their defects by using cybernetic prosthetics and augmentations. For this reason, most, if not all, Grineer are cyborgs, gradually receiving more intensive augmentations with age.
Society[]
The Grineer are a monarchal and imperialist society, ruled by the Twin Queens and their council. the Grineer Empire is hostile towards many other factions, such as the Corpus Megacorporation and the Ostrons. The Grineer Empire seeks to conquer and rule the Origin System with an iron fist. The Grineer have domesticated a sub-species of Kavats known as Hyekkas for use in clearing out the Infestation from their ships and territories, as well as creatures called Drahks to serve as attack dogs.
The Grineer follow a strict military hierarchy and are extremely harsh to those who defy their laws. Grineer who bend the law are typically shipped to the Saturn 6 corrections facility, although the Grustrag Three were returned to active service despite their evident insanity and hostility to other Grineer. Broadcasts from one of the Twin Queens in the Kuva Fortress implies that some Grineer are executed as punishment and processed into food for their comrades. Additionally, the Grineer seem to have made a blood sport out of public execution known as Rathuum, where the accused are forced to fight their executioners in an arena for the entertainment of the spectating Grineer.
However, despite their brutality and barbarism, some Grineer have deviated from the norm and defected from the empire. A faction of Grineer known as Steel Meridian are openly rebelling against their kind, protecting the inhabitants of the Origin System from their brethren. Another group of Grineer known as Kavor have rejected the violence the Grineer are known for and actively seek a peaceful existence. One Grineer known as Clem has been known to work with the rogue Corpus merchant Darvo. All of these Grineer are considered traitors and defects by the Greater Grineer empire.
