The Frosty Bulborb is a recently discovered species of Grub-Dog discovered during the Rescue Corps expedition onto PNF-404.
Biology[]
Frosty Bulborbs are medium-sized predatory grub-dogs, average size compared to that of its relatives. The coloration of the bulborb species varies in shades of blue and bluish green, though some believe that this coloration, including the reddish tint of the end of its snout, might be an after effect of the ice and frost that forms along its abdomen. The ice forms a type of shell along the abdomen, giving it a natural form of protection against larger predators.
Studies within the interior of the bloodstream show a type of anti-freezing agent, mixing its naturally forming organic and amino acids with its body's natural sugars. This type of anti-freezing develops early on in their lifetime, as early as their secondary molting in which the body temperature naturally begins the freezing process. This shell has been observed to have broken off numerous times, revealing the skin to be spotted much like other bulborbs. This ice covering can grow back over the course of a single day.
Behavior[]
Due to the natural cooling of the frosty bulborb, most of its habitat consists of subterranean caves and tunnels, where its natural coating isn't able to melt off its body. Some exceptions had been made of course, some thinking it's more likely to appear above ground during the winter months due to similar reasons.
Although the juveniles also developed this type of ice shell, they take much longer to regrow in case it broken off. Due to this, the young of the species usually remains close to the adults until they reach sexual maturity, to which they become primarily solitary.
