Opticoids, alternatively known as Sclerans,[1] are a species from the planet Sightra.[2]

Biology

Anatomy

Opticoids are reptilian creatures with two-shaded skin and many eyes scattered across their muscular upper body. Though the number of eyes varies between individuals,[3] they have at least 17. Their face consists of only a mouth and two pink, bat-like ears that dominate most of their head. An Opticoid's skeleton is made entirely out of stiff cartilage rather than bone.[2]

Opticoids can grow little tentacle-like whiskers, similar to the Galvan.[4]

Female Opticoids have slimmer builds, more voluptuous figures, and feminine eyelashes on their ears.

Although they traditionally have tan skin, Opticoids can come in other colors. For example, Opticoids from Dimension 23 have grey skin.

Powers and abilities

An Opticoid's most prominent ability is firing powerful energy beams from any of the eyes on their torsos. These beams come in different colors that correlate with that of their eyes including green, blue, red, pink, and yellow. At a bare minimum, these beams can easily push objects or people far away and are powerful enough to shatter metal and slice trees clean in half.

Opticoids have ophthalmokinesis, which allows them to control and alter the many eyes on their bodies. They can move their eyes across the surface of their bodies and merge them together to create one bigger eye. By either closing all of their other eyes or merging their eyes into a single area, a larger eye will open on their body and can stretch them outward on a stalk to better aim towards targets.

At this state, an Opticoid can launch more powerful optic blasts that knock back and take down more powerful opponents including Stone Creatures and even Celestialsapiens. If sustained, these beams can ignite explosive barrels and overload machinery.

The eyes all over an Opticoid's body can each fire a different kind of beam. Besides energy beams, they can fire including freeze rays strong enough to entrap enemies and freeze fried machinery within seconds, fire blasts hot enough to keep an Evolved Vaxasaurian at bay, electric beams that can sometimes be used to enhance other effects, and sticky goop to immobilize enemies.[2]

Similar to the compound vision of an insect, an Opticoid's eyesight give them 360-degree vision, making it extremely difficult to sneak up on them. Likewise, the eyes on their hands further allow them to peer around corners or obstacles. They can even "smell" and see trails of certain chemicals with their eyes.

Opticoids possess enhanced hearing due to their bat-like ears, allowing them to detect would-be attackers.

Opticoids possess enhanced strength, being able to lift a Tetramand and pin an Osmosian with ease. They also possess enhanced endurance, durability, and stamina, being able to take hits from even a Celestialsapien without any major damage.

Opticoids possess incredible speed, agility, and reflexes, allowing them to perform acrobatics and gymnastics with ease while doging enemy attacks. They can also jump several feet high.

Octicoids are capable of "scanning" enemies with their eyes, which visualizes their powers and abilities to them.[5]

Weaknesses

If an irritant gets in their eyes, Opticoids will be unable to see clearly, in addition to their eyes burning. As they have eyes over the majority of their bodies, they become vulnerable to being exposed and hurt by irritants.

Despite their enhanced hearing, Opticoids are sensitive to high-pitched noises, such as those produced by an Evolved Sonorosian.

Culture and society

Opticoids have a tendency to make puns involving the word "eye" or organs related to the eye.

Notes

  • The name "Opticoid" is a play on "optical", meaning related to eyes. The alternate name "Scleran" is a play on "sclera", the white area of the eyes.
    • During the production of the original series, Eye Guy's species was not referred to by name.[3] As such, the name of this species and their home planet do not appear in any official media or merchandise, being first used on July 4, 2009, when an anonymous Ben 10 Wiki user claimed that Eye Guy was an Opticoid from the planet Sightra.
    • Alternatively, Cartoon Network Universe: FusionFall, a Cartoon Network MMOG crossover released in 2009, referred to Eye Guy as being a "Scleran".
    • No source for either "Opticoid" or "Sightra" was provided until a production bible for Omniverse made in May 2012 was recovered in 2020. This document would officially canonize Eye Guy as an Opticoid from the planet Sightra.
  • Before making their debut in the reboot series, the presence of Opticoids was teased by concept artwork of Omnitrix DNA pods before it was eventually confirmed that the Omnitrix in that series contains Opticoid DNA.[6] Therefore, Eye Guy is one of the countless aliens whose DNA pod was glimpsed in the episode "Innervasion Part 5: High Override".
    • This has been supported by the appearance of the Opticoid Prisoner in the film Ben 10 Versus the Universe.
