The Faunus are a race native to the planet Remnant that co-exist with the second race of humanity.
Biology[]
Faunus are indistinguishable from humans save that they individually possess a form of animal traits. Normally these traits appear on their bodies as bestial ears, tails, claws, scales, wings, fins, etc. Mammalian type faunus appear to be more common, though rare types such as reptilian, insectoid, piscean traits are not unheard of.
Most faunus have impeccable night vision, allow them to see in the dark. However faunus are capable of inter-breeding with humans, though these unions usually result in the birth of a fanus. Faunus that breed in the same family species as their animal trait usually will result in a child having the common features. However for unions between a different species, the resulting offspring animal trait is random.
History[]
The origins of the faunus are lost to the ages as even modern scientists on Remnant have no clue of the evolutionary history of the species. However what is for sure is that the faunus came after the extinction of the first race of humanity on Remnant after being destroyed by the Gods.
In the ancient past, the faunus were seen as a race of monsters by early man due to their animal features. They were hunted and killed on sight by humanity. Over time fear of the faunus vanished when the two races began working together to fight against a common enemy, the Creatures of Grimm. Humanity though instead of accepting the faunus as equality instead used their differences to discriminate against them and enslave them.
The enslavement of the faunus ended after the end of the Great War, which saw to the establishment of equal rights and gifting the continent of Menagerie to the faunus people. Unfortunately tensions between humans and faunus still exist as humans, namely the Schnee Dust Company from the Kingdom of Atlas still continue to discriminate its faunus workforce. Other such sentiments exist in the world of Remnant which led to the calls to segregate the faunus on Menagerie seeing them as savage animals.
The Faunus Rights Revolution resulted in retaliation against this. However this would be the last time the faunus were pushed or trampled by humanity, leading to the creation of the White Fang that sought to peacefully protest the injustices of inequality against the faunus. But as time went on the White Fang slowly became more militant and bolder to use violence to get results.
