Alien Species

Eyeless Dogs, also known as Blind Dogs, or Breathing Lions, are a species of large predatory mammal from the class of animal "Saeptivus". Although found on numerous moons within the Thristle Nebula, most of the moons they're found on are more open spaced, indicating that they favor those habitats more so than densely forested areas.

Anatomy[]

Eyeless Dogs are large predatory creature, standing at roughly the same height as an earth elephant. As the name itself suggests, eyeless dogs evolved with no evidence of visual senses, and rely primarily on their sensitive hearing for navigation. Much of the head is made up of a very large, gaping mouth, with sharpened teeth that aim slightly forward.

They are four-legged creatures, their legs underneath the body like a mammal, and a long sail running from the neck down to their hindquarters. Their skin is rustic red, with a blood-like red color along the lips and mouth.

Behavior[]

Sociable animals not too dissimilar to earth's pack animals, eyeless dogs live together in very large packs, though exact numbers are still in debate. Despite living in a pack-like social structure however, they are semi-solitary hunters and members of a hunting group will spread out alone in search for prey. Even so, when one of these members finds prey, it will give off an alarm call to alert the rest of the pack to join in on its find, thus having numerous individuals swarm the prey item in question.

As they are highly sensitive to sound though, this makes them easily startled, and will attack anything that surprises them. This has been observed in numerous tests, which even inanimate objects making high amounts of noise will trigger a pack of eyeless dogs into attacking it, even if it isn't prey to them. Curiously though, despite their sensitivity to noise, there isn't any reports of eyeless dogs attacking each other, although myths of them doing so due to mistaken identity had been circulating.

Reports also indicate that, although predators on most moons, they can also become prey to moons inhabited by Baboon Hawks, though hunts like these are notably rare.
