Alien Species
"Its wings were bat-like; but its body and the dim face that gazed down upon her were like nothing of sea or earth or air; she knew she looked upon ultimate horror, upon black cosmic foulness born in night-black gulfs beyond the reach of a madman's wildest dreams."
―"The Vale of Lost Women"

The Devils from the Outer Dark are a mysterious species of bat-winged creatures which originate from an unearthly realm in outer space. In the Hyborian Age, one of these creatures was worshiped as a god by the inhabitants of the Vale of Lost Women, and descended to the Earth from the stars to devour sacrificial victims.

Biology[]

Apart from the chiropteran wings, they don't bear any resemblance to any kind of creature from Earth.

According to Conan the Cimmerian, the Devils from the Outer Dark exist in great numbers "outside the belt of light which surrounds this world". Despite their cosmic origins, they must take on a corporeal form when they visit Earth. In this physical form, they can be wounded by a sword and even defeated in combat by an unusually skilled swordsman.
