Clefable is a Fairy-type Pokémon species of extraterrestrial origins, which came down to the Pokémon world from its moon. Its life cycle includes an immature stage known as Cleffa and an intermediate stage known as Clefairy, which is only able to mature into Clefable when exposed to a Moon Stone. Both Clefairy and Clefable are also known as the Fairy Pokémon.
Biology[]
Cleffa, Clefairy and Clefable are pink-colored stout bipeds with stubby arms and legs, a curled up tail and a curl of hair on their heads. They have small mouths, oval-shaped eyes and no visible nose or nostrils. Their large ears are triangular, resembling horns, and are dark brown at the tips. In the rare shiny variant, the tips of their ears are green instead. Like all Pokémon, they can be fed fruits.
This species has a gender ratio of three females to every one male. Like all documented Pokémon, they're born from eggs. Despite being extraterrestrial, Clefairy and Clefable can mate with any other Pokémon species in the fairy egg group, and the offspring will be of the same species as the mother. Cleffa, being a baby Pokémon, is not capable of mating.
Wild populations of this species can be found on numerous locations in the regions of Kanto, Sinnoh, Unova, Alola and Galar. They occur more commonly in mountainous areas and often spend the days in caves, going out at night to dance under the moonlit sky. Their habits are communal, and they're generally friendly, if shy creatures, which are commonly sought as pets.
Cleffa[]
Nicknamed the Star Shape Pokémon due its distinctive body shape, Cleffa is a 30 cm tall pink biped, and weighs only about 3 kg. Its ears are disproportionally large at this stage, and it hasn't developed its wings yet.
Sightings of this species occur more frequently in the vicinity of meteorite impact sites, and increase considerably during meteor showers, leading to the popular belief that this Pokémon comes to Earth riding shooting stars. Groups of Cleffa have been observed to form rings and dance under meteor showers until dawn, when they quench their thirst by drinking the morning dew and then disappear, presumably hiding themselves during the day. They've also been observed to gaze at the night sky, as if thinking about home, and have an affinity for Minior.
Cleffa evolves into Clefairy after bonding with its owner and achieving a high enough friendship.
Clefairy[]
The second and most commonly-found stage, Clefairy, is twice as tall as Cleffa and weighs about 7.5 kg. It can also be distinguished by its single white claw on each foot, and its hands now have three stubby digits, two of which are equipped with short white claws. Most notably, however, it now possesses a pair of small wings on its back. Although these cannot be used for flight, they can store moonlight that gives them the ability to float. Like Cleffa, they come together at night to dance under the moon. The areas in which this ceremony occur are surrounded by mysterious magnetic fields.
Clefable[]
The third and final stage, Clefable, is more than twice as tall as Clefairy and more than five times as heavy. It has much longer ears, tail and wings, and its feet now have two claws rather than one. Conversely, its hands are still tridactyl, and seem to have lost their claws altogether. It has also lost the characteristic cheek marks that were present in both Cleffa and Clefairy.
Although still friendly, Clefable is a timid creature which often flees at the first sign of Humans, and is also said to be very protective of its habitat. Its ears are extremely sensitive, to the point of detecting a pin being dropped roughly a kilometre away. This acute hearing accounts in part for its aversion to loud noises and preference for quiet, isolated places.
Due to its larger wings compared to its previous stage, Clefable can hop lightly as if it was gliding for short distances, and is even capable of strolling over lakes and water bodies without sinking.
Cultural significance[]
Due to their adorable appearance and friendly, playful disposition, members of this species (particularly Clefairy) are highly sought as pets, even though they're somewhat rare to come across, as they spend the days sleeping communally in mountainous caves and only come out at night. It's believed that witnessing their nocturnal dances will bring happiness and good fortune. Like all Pokémon, they can also be trained for battling.

- This species is identified as originating from the Pokémon world's moon, which this wiki assumes to be Luna due to the fact that the Pokémon world bears enough similarities to Earth and frequent references are made to real world locations and concepts, especially in the earlier iterations of the franchise. Of course, if the Pokémon world is to be considered a different planet rather than (an alternate version of) Earth, then Clefairy's homeworld is not Luna, but a different moon altogether.
- Before the introduction of the fairy type in Generation VI, Cleffa, Clefairy and Clefable were classified as normal-type.
- Clefairy was originally considered for the role of franchise's mascot, but ultimately, that position went over to Pikachu.
