Species which have (whether deliberate or not) increased in sapience or level of technological advancement by another species which is already star faring. In the Star Trek Universe the Prime Directive forbids interfering with primitive cultures in this way. In the Uplift Universe it is the sacred duty of all species to continue the Chain of Uplift.
