Neotenic life forms retain traits of their immature stages throughout their lives. Like the literary Peter Pan, they "never grow up" in a sense, with some famous Earth examples including axolotls, which generally retain the appearance of a larval salamander for their entire lives; as well as the females of many insect species which remain wingless and, in many cases, look like ordinary larvae.
