Filter feeders or suspension feeders are organisms that feed by straining suspended matter and food particles from various substances, such as water or the atmosphere surrounding terrestrial beings. Some of the best examples of filter feeders on Earth are clams, krill, sponges, baleen whales and flamingos. Filter feeders can play an important role by clarifying water by extracting significant quantities of detritus, exactly like an organic water filter.
