Mot, a Bolian barber prepares to cut Worf's hair.
Bolians are a sapient humanoid species with blue skin and blue blood which hails from planet Bolarus IX. As of the late 24th century, the Bolians are active members of the United Federation of Planets.
Biology[]
Externally, they have a typical humanoid body plan, with most notable characteristics being their blue skin, lack of hair (which is somewhat ironic, given that Mot is a barber) and a thin cartilaginous double ridge extending vertically from the back of the head down to the nose, and again from chin to neck.
Thanks in part due to cartilaginous lining on their tongues, Bolians are known to appreciate strongly acid foods. Aged meat is a common ingredient in their cuisine.
A Bolian's heart is located on the right side of their body. Their blood is vivid blue in color, suggesting the presence of hemocyanin. However, it is known that the Bolian blood is highly different from that of other species, particularly Vulcans, to the point that blood transfusion between a Vulcan and a Bolian is impossible. Besides, there seems to be extensive evidence that the Bolians' internal fluids are rather odd, and possibly corrosive. Sexual relationship with Bolians is harmful for Humans. Also, during a power shortage on the spaceship Voyager, it was noted that the malfunctioning toilets would be a real problem, especially because there were Bolians on board.
Culture and society[]
Bolians are a polygamous species and their laws are notable for supporting the practice of euthanasia. They are also prominent figures in the economy of the Alpha Quadrant. The Bank of Bolias, in particular, is a very prestigious financial institute. There is also a widely appreciated musical genre known as Bolian Blues.
Notes[]
- The Bolians were named after Star Trek: The Next Generation director Cliff Bole. There have also been references to the Cliffs of Bole, a famous tourist destination on their home planet.
