Antican

The Anticans are a sapient carnivorous mammalianoid species and one of the three intelligent races native of the Beta Renner System, the other two being the Selay and the non-corporeal Beta Renner Cloud.

The Anticans and the Selay are sworn enemies and have been so since first contact. The Anticans are proud of their predatory nature and most of their culture seems to be grounded in the valorization of hunting and devouring live prey, which unfortunately for interplanetary diplomacy, includes the Selay. Both races have applied for Federation membership in the year 2364. According to Captain Jean-Luc Picard, both Anticans and Selay have a passionate hatred over "matters of custom, God concepts, even, strangely enough, economic systems". Both also have been in contact with the Ferengi.

Behind the scenes

Like many Star Trek: The Next Generation species, the Anticans and the Selay were designed by Andrew Probert. The creatures' design might be a joke related to them being mortal enemies, since the Anticans look like mongooses and the Selay resemble snakes.
