Aerophytes is the name given to millions of minuscule photosynthetic organisms that spend their whole lives floating in the atmosphere of planet Darwin IV, sometimes darkening the skies with their numbers. Along with tiny faunal organisms known as Microflyers, they act much like the plankton in Earth's oceans, providing a vast food source for the giant Darwinian flying beasts.
