Leeloominaï Lekatariba Lamina-Tchaï, Ekbat De Sebat, better known as Leeloo, and also referred to as the Fifth Element or the Supreme Being, is a genetically-engineered life form created to protect life in the universe against Evil, a cosmic being that threatens to destroy life every 5,000 years.
It's not known when and where Leeloo was created and why she looks human. The language she speaks is identified as "the divine language spoken throughout the Universe before time was time". The Mondoshawans are her guardians, and possibly her creators. It's possible that they might have made her look human because the temple of the four elements is on Earth, although this is only speculation. She has a mark on her wrist with the same symbols of the elements that are present in the four elemental stones.
Biography[]
For thousands of years, Leeloo has been kept in stasis inside a sarcophagus in the same temple in Egypt where the four elemental stones were kept, guarded by a lineage of priests. In 1914, the Mondoshawan guardians decided that the Earth was no longer a safe place to keep them, so they retrieved the stones and Leeloo, instructing the then-current priest to continue to pass on the knowledge of how to defeat Evil to his successors, and promising to return in 300 years when Evil was to awaken.
However, in 2214, Evil's human agent, Jean-Baptiste Emmanuel Zorg, hired Mangalore mercenaries to destroy the Mondoshawan ship where Leeloo was being transported en route to Earth. Although only a few of her cells were retrieved, it was enough to reconstruct her. Afterwards, Leeloo escaped from the lab and fell right into Korben Dallas' taxicab. Although he couldn't understand her language, Dallas helped her escape the police and she asked him to take her to Vito Cornelius, the current priest. Leeloo told Cornelius that the Mondoshawans had trusted the four stones to the care of the Diva Plavalaguna, who was currently on the planet Fhloston.
Coincidentally, General Munro, who had orders from the President of the Federated Territories to find a way to defeat Evil, arranged for his former major Korben Dallas to go to Fhloston to retrieve the stones. Dallas is joined by Leeloo and Cornelius (the latter a stowaway), and followed by both Zorg and the Mangalores (although the latter are no longer working for Zorg at this point).
After defeating their foes and retrieving the stones from Plavalaguna, Leeloo and Dallas arrive at the temple and activate the stones with help from Cornelius, David and Ruby Rhod. At this point Leeloo is distraught from learning about humanity's warlike nature, wondering if there's any point to saving life. However, after Dallas declares his love for her and kisses her, she draws the power of the stones and produces the Light of Creation that defeats Evil.
Abilities[]
Described as the Supreme Being, Leeloo's DNA has 200,000 memo groups (5,000 times more than a human, which has 40). A human scientist who analysed her genes concluded that "the elements of this DNA chain are the same as ours. There's just more of them, tightly packed". He also described her cells as "for lack of a better word, perfect".
Leeloo has superhuman strength and resilience, enough to easily punch through a supposedly "unbreakable" material with a single strike, and defeat several Mangalores in hand-to-hand combat. Vito Cornelius describes her as "the ultimate warrior", and both Cornelius and Leeloo herself claim that her purpose is to protect life. However, it should be noted that she isn't invulnerable, and both Cornelius and Plavalaguna believed her to be more fragile than she appeared.
In addition to her physical strength and resilience, Leeloo also has the capacity to learn new languages quickly and to absorb enormous amounts of knowledge almost instantly, in order to "catch up" every time she is awakened every 5,000 years.
When Leeloo was awakened in 2214, she was already aware that the current priest was Vito Cornelius. It's possible that the Mondoshawans might have informed her of Cornelius' name, but even so, the fact that she retained the information after having her entire body destroyed and rebuilt from a few remaining cells is remarkable.
When the four elemental stones that represent (and are activated by) water, wind, earth and fire are placed on the temple, together with the Fifth Element (Leeloo), she can channel their essences to produce the Light of Creation, a.k.a. the Divine Light, the only known way to neutralize Evil.
