Whoever kept putting "uncommon" or "locally common" in the status box, these aren't Magic cards! It's extant or extinct, or maybe endangered. It's about whether or not the species is extinct. If a species is quite abundant, then it's most likely "least concern", or if there if there isn't any conclusive information about its population, then it's "Data deficient".
